Browsing Following Jesus In The Foothills

Upside Down

When I was in seminary a friend of mine once remarked, “Jesus destroyed my life. Don’t become a Christian if you aren’t prepared for God to destroy your life. However, if you want to be happy, by all means, become a Christian.” I think there is a lot of truth to his comment. GOD WANTS TO TURN YOUR LIFE UPSIDE DOWN. I’ve heard people say, “God loves you just the way you are, but he loves you too much to let you stay that way.” The reality is that without God, our lives are already upside down; God wants to set us right side up. But unless we let Jesus turn our lives around, we won’t ever really be happy. However, if we take the risk we will discover joy! This is what Jesus does. He radically transforms the lives of the people he encounters, by rearranging their priorities. After encountering Jesus, it is simply not possible to return to business as usual. Perhaps that is why so many of us avoid a deeply personal encounter with Jesus, because we are afraid of that radical transformation. In my own life I notice that many of the things I was afraid to give up or lose, the things that I thought at one point were so important, today, I barely even think of them, they aren’t very much on my radar, they aren’t what is most important to me. Because of Jesus I have new priorities. This week, ask yourself, Am I proactively seeking Jesus? Am I making an effort to experience or encounter Him? Or am I avoiding Him? Do I welcome Him into my life, or try to help him at a “safe” distance?
