Jesus was a radical. I don’t mean he was a social activist, a revolutionary, or an extremist. I mean Jesus was a radical in the true sense of the word. A radical is someone who “gets to the root of things”. We see that in the Gospel this weekend. Jesus “gets to the root” of the Law. He goes beyond the surface, beyond custom, beyond what would be socially acceptable or politically correct. He gets to the bottom of it- to the truth. Jesus didn’t have a casual relationship with the truth. He was interested in getting to the root of things and through this lens of truth Jesus ordered everything in his life. Jesus reminds us that God’s ways are not a slight variation of man’s ways. They are in fact radically different Embrace any one of his teachings in a truly serious way and you’re likely to have people tell you you’ve gone too far. But Jesus doesn’t invite us to a life of mediocrity. He’s radical. He invites us to a radical love.
