The Third Question

Over the past few weeks we’ve been exploring the “Jesus Question.” We started with the question Jesus himself posed to his disciples, “Who do YOU say Jesus is?” We expanded the question further asking, “Who does Jesus say He is?”. But there is a third question that could be asked, that doesn’t appear in the Bible, but nonetheless is worthy of consideration, and one that can help us to further understand the “Jesus Question.” God desires a deep, dynamic, personal relationship with YOU. So the third question is this: “Who does Jesus say YOU are?”

Here are some of the things Jesus says about YOU:

  1. Jesus says you are a child of God (Matthew 6:9).
  2. Jesus says you are infinitely valuable (Matthew 5:14; 12:50; Luke 12:7)
  3. Jesus says you are free (John 10:10; John 8:36; Luke 4:8)

“Who do you say Jesus is?” “Who does Jesus say he is?” “Who does Jesus say you are?” These three questions are worthy of our attention. Jesus wants to be clear about who he is, because being clear about who he is allows us to become clear about who we are. The Second Vatican Council in its document The Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) taught, “The truth is that only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light. For Adam, the first man, was a figure of Him Who was to come, namely Christ the Lord. Christ, the final Adam, by the revelation of the mystery of the Father and His love, fully reveals man to man himself and makes his supreme calling clear.”
