Last week we asked, “Who does Jesus say he is?” and we considered his claim to be God. Because of our faith that Jesus is God, we have hope. This week, let’s consider some more of Jesus’ claims about himself:
- Jesus claimed to be able to give eternal life (John 10:27-28). Jesus showed people how to have a richer, more meaningful, abundant life on earth. But he also reminded people that there is more to being human than this life. He pointed others to eternity.
- Jesus claimed to be the Messiah (Mark 14:61-62). Over and over again, Jesus claimed to be the “anointed one”, the “messiah”, the fulfillment of prophecy, the long awaited one, and the realization of past hope.
- Jesus claimed he could see into the future (Luke 18:31-33). Not only did Jesus fulfill the hopes and expectation of ages past, but also his claims to know the future assured people he was also the fulfillment of future hope.
- Jesus claimed to pre-exist the world (John 17:5). As we struggle in the present world, we find comfort and strength on earth, and we look forward in hope to heaven, because our hope is rooted in faith in the one who created the heavens and the earth.
